Overall, it can be observed that the section “other” experienced a dramatic downward trend over the whole period, while the adult fiction genre recorded the highest increase of all sections.
Firsly, in 1972 the “other” slice represented the biggest area of interest (25% of the total), however adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography stand at the same rate which was 20%. Travel was the least choice, representing just 15% of the interest.
After 20 years, the two main preferred book kinds were adult’s fiction and children’s fiction, 25% and 22% respectively, while “other” experienced a slight fall of 5% compared to 1972. In contrast, biography and travel share roughly the same proportion, even though the first one rose to 18%, the latter decreased from 20% to 15%.
In 2012, adult fiction constituted the largest preference’s section (45% of the total), proving to be the most important growth of the 40-year period. The children’s book area steady at 25%, while the last three literature genres shared nearly the same percentage: “other” 12%, travel 10% and biography 8%.
