The two pie charts show the share of different energy types in 2015 and the predicted numbers for 2040.
Overall, total energy capacity is expected to grow by 2040. Fossil fuels will remain the main source of energy in both years, while solar and wind power will see the biggest increases.
In 2015, total capacity was 6.688 GW. Fossil fuels made up the largest part at 64%. Other renewables were second at 23%, and nuclear power was 6%. Wind and solar made up the smallest shares, at 5% and 2% each.
By 2040, total capacity is predicted to rise to 11.678 GW. The share of fossil fuels will drop to 44%, but it will still be the largest source. Nuclear energy will drop slightly to 5%, and other renewables will fall to 21%. On the other hand, solar energy will jump to 18%, and wind power will more than double to 12%.
