The three pie charts compare the proportions of French secondary school students who favoured five different sports: tennis, swimming, basketball, football and other activities in 1990, 2000 and 2010.
Overall, swimming was the most popular sport throughout the entire period, whereas tennis consistently absorbed the smallest group of students. The basketball showed the most dramatic fluctuation, while the figures for the other sports changed more gradually.
Swimming was already the biggest favourite in 1990, and was chosen by 39% of students. This figure rose to a peak of 48% in 2000 before falling to 41% in 2010, retaining this position across three years. Tennis by contrast, remained on the least preferred position, accounting for between 4% 7% over the entire period.
The remaining categories showed more varied movements. Basketball dropped from 16% in 1990 to just 7% in 2000, but then increased to 25% in 2010. Football followed the opposite trend, climbing from 16% to 18% before dropping sharply to 8%. Meanwhile, the proportion opting for other sports declined steadily, from 25% to 23% and then to 19%.
