The three illustrations display the most famous sports among the French secondary school students in 1990, 2000 and 2010.
Overall, the students favored swimming the most in three years, while tennis was their least favorite throughout the period. Interestingly, other sports were the second most popular in the first two years, whose place was taken by basketball in 2010.
Almost half of the students enjoyed swimming in 1990 and 2000. The proportion increased by almost 10% between these years, from 39% to 48%. Although it dropped by 7%, hitting 41% in 2010, it remained the students’ most favorite sports throughout the period. By contrast, the least popular sport in French secondary schools in all three years was tennis, contributing only 4% in the first two years and 7% in 2010.
Around a quarter of the children were participating in other sports in 1990 and 2000, making it the second most famous criteria, compared to the others. However, its place was overtaken by a significant increase in popularity gained by basketball in 2010, representing exactly one-fourth, more than its portions from the first two years combined. Other sports, representing only less than one-fifth, ranked third in terms of popularity in the last year of the period.
