The pie chart compare the most popular sports among secondary school students in France in 1990, 2000 and 2010.
Overall swimming was the most popular sport throughout the period, while tennis accounted for the smallest proportion in the first two years. Another noticeable trend is that basketball became significantly more popular by 2010, whereas football declined.
In 1990, swimming represented the largest share at 39%. Basketball and football were equally popular, each accounting for 16% of students. Meanwhile, other sports made up 25%, while tennis was the least popular activity at only 4%.
By 2000, the popularity of swimming increased considerably to 48%. In contrast, basketball dropped sharply to just 7%. Football rose slightly to 18%, while the figure for other sports decreased marginally to 23%. Tennis remained unchanged at 4%.
In 2010, swimming still dominated at 41%, although this was lower than in 2000. Basketball experienced a dramatic rise to 25%, becoming the second most popular sport. However, football fell significantly to only 8%, while other sports declined slightly to 19%. Tennis increased moderately to 7%.
