Overall, swimming consistently was the most popular sport in French secondary schools, while the least favorite was tennis. Tennis, swimming, and basketball increased over the three-year period, while football and other sports category declined.
In 1990, swimming accounted for 39% of proportion and became the most popular sport in secondary schools, which then climbing moderately to about 48% in 2000, before declining slightly to just around 41% by 2010. Basketball figures made up just 16% in 1990, and then decreased modestly to just 7% in 2000, before growing significantly to 25% by 2010. Tennis remained relatively stable as the least favorite sport, the percentage of pupils who interested just around 4% in 1990 and 2000, and then rising modestly to about 7% by 2010.
By contrast, football recorded a slight growth from 16% at the beginning of the period to 18% in 2000, before decreasing significantly to just around 8% by 2010. Other sports category saw a gradual decline from 25% in 1990 to 23% in 2000, and continued fall into just about 19% by 2010.
