The first chart illustrates the comparable proportion of responses made by teachers who teaching in Britain language to a survey concerning why their students choose learning a foreign language; while the other chart illustrates the changes has made in the reasons recently.
Overall, it records that people mostly choose learning new language because of their purpose to travel; however, teachers who participated in the survey claim that most learners start to studying foreign language to support their buying property overseas recently.
Regarding the most common reasons for learning, travel and business/work are primary drivers, with its 33% and 26%, respectively. Followed by buying property overseas, 19% of the responses said that people tend to studying foreign language to buy property overseas. Personal development and social contact share the same proportion, with 7%. While general interest represents 5%, compared to those in a foreign partner with 3%.
Concerning a recent increase in people learning for the mentioned reasons, the figure for buying property overseas accounts for the largest share, with 34%, and that of business/work with 19%. Meanwhile, the share of people who decide to learning new language for social contact consists of 15%, similar to that for “no charge” options. In addition, it recorded a slight increase in general interest, about a one percentage point increase. Finally, foreign partner and personal development show an insignificant percentage, with 4% for both sections.
