The given pie charts illustrate changes in online retail sales across various sectors in New Zealand from 2003 to 2013.
Overall, sales of books, as well as films and music, showed an upward trend during this period, while sales of clothing and travel declined. Although travel was the most purchased category at the start of the period, by 2013, film and music had become the most popular, marking the most significant change alongside clothing.
To begin with, travel and clothing experienced a downward trend over the decade. In 2003, the travel sector accounted for 36% of online sales, but by 2013, this figure had decreased to 23%. Similarly, clothing sales fell from 24% in 2003 to 16% in 2013.
In contrast, sales of books and films and music increased, though at different rates. Books were the least sold category in 2003, comprising 19% of all sales. By 2013, book sales had only marginally increased by 3%, reaching 22%. Film and music, initially the third most sold category at 23%, saw a significant rise of 12 percentage points to 33% by 2013.
