The given charts illustrate the sales of book in proportion of bookseller from 1972 to 2012. Overall, it is evident that the percentage of adult fiction and that of children’s fiction saw an increase, while the opposite trend was true for the remaining sectors.
At the begging of the period, adult fiction consisted of a fifth, it rose slightly to 25% in 1992 before jumping enormously to nearly 45%, became the largest sale in 2012. Moreover, children’s fiction followed a similar growth, albeit at lower rate. This figure started at 20% and climbed by just 5% during 40 years.
In terms of the remaining categories, the percentage of others was the highest sector, making up 25% in 1972. However, there was a significant downward trend in this figure, dropped to 20% by 1992 and to just over one in ten in 2012. The rate of biography also felt sharply between 1972 and 2012, from 20% to only 8%, respectively. Finally, travel took up 15% in 1972, then it soared minimally by 3% before decreasing dramatically to 10% in 2012.
