Food expenditure followed a similar pattern, making up 27% in Malaysia compared with 24% in Japan.
Turning to the remaining categories, spending on transport accounted for twice as much in Japan as in Malaysia, at 20% and 10% respectively. Likewise, health care experienced a small share in both cases, with Japan (6%) being exactly double the figure of Malaysia (3%).
