Overall, the majority of individuals entered and left Australia in 2010 because they had definite jobs. However, a comparatively small number of people came to Australia because they were looking for a job, whereas the lowest number of people who departed the country were to pursue formal education.
In terms of reasons for migration, having a definite job accounted for 38% of all immigration to Australia, and almost a similar number (37%) of people emigrated for the same purpose. Over one fifth of people relocated to Australia for formal study, which was the second major factor, while only 6% left the nation for formal study.
In relation to other migratory reasons, the percentage of individuals who immigrated and emigrated to join a family member was quite close in both cases, at 17% and 16%, respectively. Moreover, one tenth of the population gave job search as the reason for immigration, while the number of people who emigrated for this purpose was twice.
