Overall, sedans consistently held the largest share of the market throughout the period, though their dominance steadily declined over time. Meanwhile, the “others” category gained momentum and eventually became the second most popular choice, while SUVs also saw a steady growth before stabilizing.
In 1994, sedans dominated the market, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all car sales (74%). However, their popularity declined, dropping to 62% in 2004. and continued falling to just over half (51%) by 2013. SUVs followed the opposite trend – starting from a mere 7% in 1994, their share more than doubled to 17% in 2004 and remained at that level in 2013.
The “others” category, which made up 19% of sales in 1994, saw a steady rise in popularity, reaching 21% in 2004. Following this, the figure increased more significantly to 32% in 2013 – surpassing SUVs and becoming the second most purchased type.
As for the total car sales, it saw a nearly twofold increase, rising from 42,900 in 1994 to 85,000 by 2013.
