Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the spending habits of people in the UK significantly changed compared with the past. Previously, food was the largest category, while computers had the smallest proportion of spending on goods. In marked contrast, after three decades, the most common item was cars.

In the past, spending on restaurant was one of the smallest categories with 7%. However this figure had increased to 14% in 2001. The proportion of spending on furniture remained generally, while the books and computers sections changed a lot. In 1971, computers were the smallest category with 2%, followed by books with 6%. In marked contrast, in 2001, books became the smallest category with 1%, while percentage of computers had increased to 12%
