The graphs below illustrate the percentage of food consumption in the world, China, and India in 2008. Overall, it is obvious that processed food dominated the market in all areas, while the other categories are indifferent in the three graphs.
The proportion of processed food contained 41% of all food consumption in the world, followed by vegetables and fruits, accounting for 29%, and animal food, constituting 26%, which represented the third largest share in 2008. Moreover, nuts and seeds were the smallest contributor to the whole world’s consumption, which accounted for only 4%.
On the other hand, the patterns of China and India are different, although processed food still occupied the biggest proportion, at 34% and 39%, respectively. The second largest expenses in China were vegetables and fruits, making up 32%, while 23% in India. However, nuts and seeds accounted for 11% of the minimal consumption in India, whereas the third largest percentage in China, at 19%.
