Overall, food was the dominant expenditure in 1958, while housing was the highest expenditure in 2008. However, there were significant difference on other expenditures over the five decades.
The proportion of spending on housing accounted at 22% in 1958. This figure increased to 32% by 2008, which was the most spending among others. Similarly, the figure for luxury produsts rose significantly from 7% in 1958 to 17% by 2008. There was a gradual rise in the percentage of travel or transport from 8% to 17% over the given period.
In contrast, the figure for food accounted for 32% in 1958, which was the peak of expenditure. However, this figure fell dramatically to 12% by the end of the period. There was almost a half as much spending on entartainment in 1958 as in 2008, with 13% in 2008. Meanwhile. the proportion of clothing was almost the same through out the period, with 18% at the beginning of the period and 16% at the end of the period.
