The plans illustrate the interior of a traditional two-storey Japanese house and its modern counterpart.
Overall, there is a decline in using tatami flooring and futon beds in non-traditional house with more open area dowstairs and more rooms upstairs. In addition, sliding doors are not commonly used in modern house.
Looking first at the ground floor, the entrance which is located in the lower right corner of the building lead to the hallway along the right side of the traditional layout. There are three separated rooms including a huge kitchen, a bathroom and a traditional Japanese rest room. The rest room for night-time is situated along the shorter side of the house, while in modern house, they are reoriented in the longer side. The kitchen changed from a room to an open area and its size is decrease to make place for living or dining place and a room for sleeping.
Regarding the upstairs area, there are two bedrooms with futon beds and 2 cupboards, while its modern counterpart does not have any place to store futon beds and it has more Western-style bedrooms. Sliding doors and traditional Japanese flooring called Tatami are replaced by doors and normal flooring. Notably, the bathroom in origional house is situated in the ground floor, while in today’s house, it is moved to the first floor.
