The two maps compare the village called Oxton as it was thirty years ago and as it appears today.
Overall, the village has significantly transformed over the years, with a substantial increase in amenities that enhanced the living standards of inhabitants, accessibility, and entertainment opportunities. Moreover, carparks and public footpaths were introduced making Oxton more accessible, while preserving the existing road network.
Oxton used to include fewer facilities thirty years ago. There was a river that extended from West to South that crossed almost all roads in the village with woods to the North-West side of it. The Castle Street crossed the village in the middle, to the west of which was located swimming pool close to a castle over the river. In the junction between Pallant road and The Castle Street, a supermarket was situated. Rows of shops were featured on Mat Avenue in the middle of the layout. Moving to the South, a railway line crossed Mat Avenue, where railway station was located.
By contrast, the present Oxton offers more amenities. While the road infrastructure and railway line remained intact, the Mat Avenue has been turned into a tramline with two carparks on both ends, one near Railway station and other on the North side. One additional car park has been constructed adjacent to the supermarket. Moreover, the swimming pool has been transformed into a leisure center. Finally, there are more public footpaths available and flowers have been planted, where the old wood stood.
