The map illustrates how Oxton town has changed over 30 years.
Overall, this town has been surrounded by a curved river, therefore, all of daily activities have occurred and depended on this one. Additionally, in recent years, there are many additional facilities such as a swimming pool, retail stores and parking lots and public footpaths which serve for humans’ needs.
Regarding the layout of Oxton town thirty years ago, on the south bank of the river, there were a lot of trees, while the castle and supermarket were located on either side of the river. Besides that, to the Southwest of the map, it could be seen a swimming pool which is placed below the castle. As for roads, May Avenue was the main road which divided the area into two parts including the northwest and the northeast side. Another road originating to the southeast was separated into two branches, the first one named Castle Street as it led to the castle house while the second one penetrated the woodland to the Northeast of the town. Additionally, there were a row of shops located along May Avenue. Finally, at the bottom of the map, a railway line and its station was stretched from the Western part to the Eastern part of the town.
In terms of its transformation, the woodland is cut down for erecting a new public footpath and make room for a flower garden. Three different car parks have also been built around the town, one near the railway station, one near the supermarket, and the third one on the north bank, which can be accessed through Pallant Road. In contrast, the swimming pool in the past has been replaced by a new leisure centre which is used for recreational activities. Furthermore, some new footpaths are constructed on both sides of the river.
