There are two charts illustrating the minutes that were spent by each gender for different activities. The first table shows the time spent on free time activities, while the bar chart represents the figures for household chores in 2008 in the UK.
Overall, it is clear that watching TV and doing sport were the main activities of men at their free time, compared to women who chose to read books more. When it came to household tasks, British men predominantly engaged in repair work, whereas women spent considerably more time on other domestic duties such as laundry, ironing, shopping, and cooking.
Beginning with activities, such as watching TV and video or listening to the radio, both genders tended to spend most of their leisure time on these by 137 minutes for men and 118 minutes for women per day. Similarly, males (15 minutes) dedicated more time to sport than females (11 minutes). Interestingly, women found reading slightly more engaging than men, allocating an average of 19 minutes per day to this activity, whereas their male counterparts spent just one minute less.
In the second chart, women allocated a considerable number of minutes a day for cooking and washing-up at nearly 75 minutes, whereas males spent on the same activity for approximately 30 minutes. In terms of shopping, barely 32 minutes daily is spent by males, less time than for females spending 38 minutes. The figures relating to repairing largely fell under men’s responsibilities, with them spending nearly 20 minutes a day compared to 15 minutes for women. Unlike repair work, the washing and ironing of clothes took up approximately 10 minutes for men and 30 minutes for women on a daily basis.
