The table illustrates the distribution of smokers from Britain in each gender, who aged between 15 and 20 from 1970 to 2000, given in percentages. Overall, it can be seen that the proportion of male smokers was higher than female, whereas in the middle of the period female smokers rate went up to almost equal to men.
In 1970, there was a smoking rate in men and women at 10 percent and 5 percent, respectively. Male rose significantly to 22 percent five years later and continued to climb up marginally at 35 percent, then reached a highest of 37 percent in 1985. Female also had a notable growth at 13 percent in 1975. After five years, it climbed continuously to 22 percent, 34 percent in the next five years and surged to 37 percent in 1990, which was the same male proportion in 1985. In the later 1995, there was a slight drop in both genders and they ended up at 28 percent and 27 percent for male and female in 2000, respectively.
