The table illustrates the proportion of students pursuing education in six departments in an Australian university in 2011.
The overall table illustrates that the English department has a dominant number of females among all six departments, while other departments have more number of people whose first language is not English, in turn, the highest proportion of students born outside Australia was in the department of physics and math.
To begin with we can see from the table that the percentage of females give priority to an English and Modern languages departaments. 72% of English departments consist of female students while the Modern languages department has 68% of female students. At the same time History and Physics departments have a more balanced proportion of male-female students, 52% in History and 56% in Physics students are female. In comparison females students give low priority to Mathematic and Chemistry departments, 17 and 15 percent in Math and chemistry. Among students whose first language isn’t English, Mathematics had the highest share at 49%. History followed at 45%, with Chemistry close behind at 42%. Physics stood at 38%. English had the lowest proportion by far, at 12%. A similar trend appears among students born outside Australia. Physics and Mathematics led the group, both at 56%. Chemistry also had a strong presence at 48%. In contrast, English and Modern Languages were much lower, at 20% and 23%.
