The table below describes data about students of an Australian university who were studying in various departments in 2011.
Overall, what stands out from the table is that the majority of students were girls in four departments, except Math and Chemistry. It is clear that most students in each department were using English as a first language, and the number of Australian students was higher than other nationalities in most departments.
In the department of English, 72% of students were females, and 12% of them were not using English as a first language. In addition, 20% of these students were born outside Australia. Regarding Modern Languages, the majority of the department were girls (68%), and the percentages of those not using English as a first language and those born outside Australia were 16% and 23%, respectively. In the History department, almost half of the students were females and used another language as a native language. 69% of people who studied in this department were Australian.
On the other hand, the situation in the Physics department was similar to the department of History, but almost half of the students were born outside Australia (56%). In the departments of Math and Chemistry, the proportion of female students was 17% and 15%. While nearly half of the students were using English as a mother tongue in Math, 42% of students’ first languages were not English. In these departments, the percentage trend for those born outside Australia was at 56% and 48%, respectively.
