The line graph provides information about the proportion of labor force employed in 6 industries in Australia from 1989 to 2009. Overall, the percentage of people in manufacturing and retail sectors showed a downward trend, while the opposite was true for other remaining categories. Healthcare replaced manufacturing sector’s dominance in the employment rate over the years.
Focusing on increases first, the percentage of people in healthcare services experienced a slight increase of 1,7%, rising from 9,6% to 11,3% between 1989 and 2009, exhibiting the biggest employent share among all categories. The proportion of people employed in construction, similarly, showed an increase of 1,7% within a 20-year period. Education and tourism, meanwhile, underwent almost similar pattern of growth in workforce rate. The former has seen a rise from 6,8% to 7,5%, whereas the latter – from 5,5% to 7,3%.
In contrast, the figure for employees in the area of production decreased significantly. Once incorporating 15% of labor force in 1989, the figure went down to 9,8% by 2009. Regarding retailing, a decline was relatively smaller. The percentage of workers in this area fell from 11,8% to 10,1%, being the second biggest share among others.
