Independent cinema is known for its ability to create outstanding works and achieve unexpected results at the box office. The given table provides the data on independent movies released in the UK and Republic of Ireland by genre in 2012 which includes the genres themselves and also their percentage of all releases and their income from ticket sales.
Overall, drama and documentary are two of the most productive genres – in a given period of time they have 35 works respectively, while comedy is inferior to them by 9 films, but surpasses them in terms of percentage of rental profits (45.4%). In contrast, biopic and romance have the least number of releases.
As it was mentioned earlier, drama and documentary are the main contributors in the number of works (each of them is nearly a quarter of all releases). At the same time, nearly every fifth work of independent creators was in the comedy genre. And it is a biopic that showed only one movie in 2012.
In contrast, when it comes to revenue, the figures reveal a different pattern. So, the most profitable genre was comedy (more than 45% of ticket sales). However, in terms of a single film, the biopic was remarkable, as it contributed over 9% to the total income from ticket sales. Alas, thriller, documentary, and action earned almost nothing (1-4%).
It indicates that the number of releases does not necessarily correspond to their financial success.
