The table presents information on the change in the proportion of individuals playing seven diverse sports in a European country between 1999 and 2009.
Overall, while football was the most popular within these sports, golf and yoga were the least attractive ones throughout the period. Notably, almost all sport categories experienced growth to various degrees, with the only exceptions being basketball and football.
With regard to football, the percentage of people attending it decreased steadily from 57% in 1999 to 48% in 2009. By contrast, the proportion of those who go swimming grew slightly from 32% in 1999 to 32% in 2009. This was followed by the percentage of those keen on tennis that reported a moderate rise from 25% in 1999 to 33% in 2009.
Looking at basketball, the proportion of people who preferred it fell slightly from 26% in 1999 to 24% in 2009. In contrast, the percentage of people playing volleyball went up slowly from 1999 (17%) to 2009 (18%). Yoga’s attendance rates came next, at 10% in 1999, which went up slightly to 13% in 2009. Eventually, the percentage of people engaged in golf increased moderately from 8% 1999 to 17% in 2009.
