Overall, participation in leisure activities increased over the period, and adults in urban areas were generally more active than those in rural areas in both years. In addition, most activities became more popular in 2010 compared with 1990.
In 1990, urban residents showed higher participation rates in all four activities than people living in rural areas. One or two activities, such as watching television or socialising, attracted the largest proportions of adults, while others, including cultural or outdoor activities, were less popular, particularly in rural areas.
By 2010, the percentage of adults taking part in free-time activities had risen in both areas. Urban areas continued to record higher figures, although the gap between urban and rural participation narrowed for some activities. This suggests that access to leisure opportunities in rural areas improved over time. However, certain activities still remained more common among city residents.
