The table illustrates information about the proportion of health spending as a percentage of GDP in five developed countries in 2022.
Overall, it is evident that the USA recorded by far the highest overall expenditure, whereas Japan had the lowest share. In all countries, total spending reflects the combined contributions of both public and private sectors.
To begin with, the public expenditure of the USA was slightly lower than that of Germany, at 17% and 18% respectively. However, private spending in the USA was significantly higher, standing at 20% compared with 15% in Germany. As a result, the USA had the largest total health expenditure of 40% of GDP, while Germany followed with 35%.
Turning to Japan and Italy, public expenditure was the same in both nations at 10%. However, Japan spent less privately, at just 5%, whereas Italy allocated 8%. Consequently, Japan’s total spending stood at 20%, while Italy recorded a higher figure of 25%.
Finally, France had a moderate expenditure level, with total health spending at 30%. Public and private contributions accounted for 15% and 12% respectively, making it the third highest overall among the five countries.
