The table summarises the sales of fiction books, non-fiction books and magazines in a college bookshop during February 2000. The figures are divided into purchases made by non-book club members (college staff, college students and members of the public) and book club members.
Overall, magazines were the most popular items sold, while fiction books recorded the lowest sales. In addition, college students purchased the highest number.
Among non-book club members, college students were by far the biggest buyers, purchasing 1,249 magazines, 194 non-fiction books and 31 fiction books, for a total of 1,474 items. College staff bought 405 items altogether, including 332 magazines, 44 fiction books and 29 non-fiction books. In contrast, members of the public purchased only 204 items, consisting of 122 non-fiction books and 82 magazines, with non-fiction books sold by this group.
Book club members showed a different pattern of buying. They purchased 942 non-fiction books, making this by far the most popular category among them. They also bought 76 fiction books but only 33 magazines, the lowest magazine sales of any group.
Overall, the bookshop sold 3,134 items during the month, including 1,696 magazines, 1,287 non-fiction books and 151 fiction books.
