The table compares the proportion of students studying in various departments at a certain university in Australia in 2009. It compares the percentage of female students, those whose first language is not English, and students born outside Australia.
Overall, it is evident that the English and Modern languages department had the highest rate of female students. Additionally, the highest proportion of students whose first language was not English was found in the Modern Languages department. Moreover, the highest rate of students who were born outside Australia was recorded in the Chemistry and Modern Language departments.
In detail, 67% of students were female in the English department, whereas the Chemistry department only had 29% of female students. In addition, 63% of the Modern Languages department and 58% of the History department were female students. Meanwhile, the proportion of female students in the Physics was slightly lower than in Maths, at 37% and 42%, respectively.
Moreover, 38% and 36% of Physics and Maths students’ first language was not English, whereas the proportion of students whose English was not their first language was 42% in the Modersn Languages department. The English and History departments had the lowest level of non-English students.
The Modern Languages, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths departments had the highest proportion of students who were born outside Australia, at 54%, 47%, 44%, and 43%, respectively. In contrast, the History and English departments only had 18% and 27% of students who were born in other countries.
