The table compares the quantity of top universities ranked among the world’s top 200 in three academic fields in five different nations in 2001.
Overall, it is apparent that the USA possessed the largest number of prestigious universities in the world’s top 200, whereas New Zealand recorded the lowest figure. Additionally, top institutions in the USA, the United Kingdom and New Zealand were mostly found in Biology, while Psychology predominated in Australia and Canada.
Among the five countries, the US ranked highest in all three disciplines, with a total of 181 top universities, including 69, 54 and 58 in Biology, Medicine and Psychology, respectively. This was followed, albeit far behind, by the United Kingdom, at 75 in total. Australia and Canada, by contrast, had far fewer institutions ranked in the top 200, at 39 and 35, respectively. The figure for New Zealand was 12, placing it at the bottom of the ranking.
Of the three disciplines, Biology was the most dominant subject area in the US (69), the UK (30) and New Zealand (6). In the two remaining nations, Psychology took the lead, with the figures being 17 in Australia and 14 in Canada. Meanwhile, the number of academic institutions in Medicine remained in the middle range across most countries.
