The tables summarize the data on Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 5 European countries over the period from 1999 to 2004.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that Fairtrade products rose throughout 5 countries, but except for Denmark and Sweden, where the banana trade decreased over time, changing from 1.8 to 1 and from 2 to 0.9, respectively.
In 1999, Switzerland had the biggest revenue from coffee, making 3 million euros from Fairtrade. By 2004, Switzerland doubled this amount and reached 6 million euros from coffee sales. On the other hand, UK reached only half of Switzerland’s purchases with 1.5 million euros by 1999, but skyrocketed this number in 2004, hitting a dramatic 20 million.
UK made 15 million euros from the Fairtrade banana, which eventually made them the top buyers amongst five countries in 1999. Similarly to coffee, UK escalated its sales by 2004, tripling to an enormous 47 million. While other countries like Switzerland and Belgium also increased their Fairtrade-labelled banana purchases, Sweden and Denmark experienced a slight decline from 1999 to 2004.
