The information regarding the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries for the years 1999 and 2004 is presented in the image above. Overall, the sales of both products increased in most countries. The UK experienced the most significant rise in both coffee and banana sales, while some countries did not show a notable difference in their sales figures.
In 1999, Switzerland recorded the highest coffee sales at 3 million euros, followed by Denmark and the UK, with sales of 1.8 and 1.5 million euros respectively. Belgium and Sweden reported much lower sales figures. By 2004, sales in the UK had surged sharply to 20 million euros, whereas all other countries saw only modest increases. It is also important to note that Sweden continued to have the lowest consumption levels.
Banana sales saw notable growth in the UK and Switzerland, rising to 47 million euros and 5.5 million euros respectively. Belgium also recorded an increase in banana sales, while Denmark and Sweden experienced declines, with figures dropping to 0.6 million euros and 0.9 million euros.
