The information about the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries in 1999 and 2004 is presented in the picture above. Overall, sales of both products increased in most countries. The UK experienced the largest rise in both the coffee and bananas sales, whereas some countries did not experience significant difference in sales
In 1999, Switzerland recorded the highest coffee sales at 3 million euros, followed by Denmark and the UK, at 1.8 and 1.5 million euros respectively. Much lower figures were seen in Belgium and Sweden. By 2004, sales increased sharply in the UK to 20 million euros, while all other countries saw only small rises. It can also be noted that Sweden remained the lowest consumer.
Banana sales were boosted in the UK and Switzerland, rising to 47 and 5.5 million euros respectively. Belgium also experienced growth, whereas Denmark and Sweden saw declines, falling to 0.6 and 0.9 million euros.
