The two tables illustrate the sales of Fairtrade-labeled coffee and bananas in five European countries across two years: 1999 and 2004.
Overall, sales of both Fairtrade coffee and bananas increased in all listed countries over the five-year period. Notably, coffee sales in the UK grew substantially, while banana sales in Switzerland experienced the most significant surge.
In 1999, Belgium and Sweden recorded the lowest sales of Fairtrade coffee, at 0.8 million and 1 million respectively. Conversely, Switzerland led the market with 3 million in coffee sales. By 2004, sales in the UK and Switzerland had risen considerably, while other countries also saw significant growth.
Regarding bananas, sales in Sweden and Denmark were similar in 1999, and both countries experienced a nearly twofold increase by 2004. Furthermore, the sales of Fairtrade-labeled products in Switzerland doubled during this period, rising from 3 million to 6 million, which indicates a marked increase in consumer demand.
