This graph illustrates the percentage of selected reprocessed materials in a country from 1982 to 2010. Overall, a marked trend toward recycling rates can be seen, although variations in levels and proportions are evident.
From 1982 to 2010, different recycled materials increased from up to 10% in 1986 to 70% by 2010. This rise has been primarily driven by plastics and aluminum cans which recorded the lowest figures around 1986. In 2020 these figures stood at below 10% for plastics to 45% for aluminum cans.
In contrast, Glass containers and paper & cardboard demonstrated some of the highest recycling rates. In 1982 Glass container recycling was at 50% on the other hand paper & cardboard was at 65%. Compared to these two materials Aluminum cans and plastics were at 0% in 1982. In 1990 there was a 5% decrease in the recycling of Glass containers and paper & cardboard. From 1990 to 2010 plastics and glass containers recycling rose steadily and the lowest by up to 10%. While Aluminum cans recycling accelerated by 40%.
