Overall, there was a striking decrease in the use of butter over the years. The most dramatic consumption is with low fat and reduced spreads which was not consumed for the first half of the period. Margarine consumption was relatively stable throughout the period.
The highest consumption of butter was in 1986, around 160 grams. After that, the amount of consumption started decreasing around 50 grams in 2007. On the other hand, the use of margarine was around 90 grams and showed a minor fall before it reached its peak at 100 grams, and stayed consistent until 1996. By 2007, the consumption rate decreased to 40 grams.
The most striking date in the graph is with low fat and reduced spreads. which people started using in 1996, which was less than 20 grams and peaked just after to more than 80 grams in 2001 and by 2007 it fell to 70 grams.
