The table illustrates the average daily time spent using mobile phones in Australia, India, Japan and worldwide between 2010 and 2014.
Overall, mobile phone usage increased steadily in all regions over the period, with the exception of a slight decline in Japan in 2011. While Japan recorded the highest figures at the beginning, Australia became the leading user by 2014.
At the start of the period, Japan ranked first, with people spending 3.1 hours per day on their phones. Although this figure dropped marginally in the following year, it then rose consistently, reaching 5.1 hours by 2014. Australia, which initially ranked second at 1.2 hours per day, experienced a rapid and continuous rise, eventually overtaking Japan and becoming the highest user at 5.2 hours in the final year.
By contrast, India and the global average recorded the lowest usage levels in 2010, at just 0.3 and 04 hours respectively. However, both figures increased substantially over the period, with India rising to 3 hours and the worldwide average to 2.1 hours by 2014.
