Overall the reasons for visit in 1980 and 2010 remained relatively unvaried with holiday visits the overwhelming majority in both years with 44.1% and 39.1% respectively. The most signifcant increase was observed in the number of travellers to the UK with the purpose of visiting friends or relatives with the number jumping from 18.7% to 28.2% by 2010. Similarly the largest decrease was observed within the non-specific category of other, observing a significant drop from 16.6% to 9.8%. While business visits remained relatively unchanged only increasing by a net 2.1% in this period.
