Over the next few years, handheld games continued to rise steadly, reaching about 17 billion dollars by 2006, Console games, however, experienced a gradual fall, dropping from close to 6 billion in 2000, to just over 3 billion in 2006.
Meanwhile, mobile phone and online games saw significant growth. Mobile games increased from zero in 2000 to around 7 billion in 2006, while online games followed a similar pattern, rising sharply after 2002 and reaching nearly 9 billion by the end of the period.
In general, the market shifted from being dominated by console games, to one where handheld, mobile, and online formats played a much more significant role.
