Band 8+: Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Access to clean and safe water is indeed one of the fundamental human rights, as it is essential for survival and basic hygiene. Some people believe that governments should provide water to every household free of charge. While I agree that everyone deserves access to clean water, I do not think it should be completely free for all people.

On the one hand, water is indispensable for human life, and ensuring that all citizens have access to it should be a top priority for any government. In many developing countries, a large proportion of people still struggle to obtain clean water for drinking and washing, which leads to serious health problems and the spread of diseases such as cholera or typhoid. By offering a free water supply, authorities could protect public health and promote equality, especially among low-income families who cannot afford to pay for it regularly. Moreover, when basic needs are met, people are more likely to lead productive and dignified lives, contributing positively to society.

On the other hand, providing free water to every household would put a heavy financial burden on the government. Water treatment, storage, and distribution require costly infrastructure and continuous maintenance. If water were entirely free, people might also waste it, leading to shortages and environmental damage. For instance, in countries where water charges are low or nonexistent, citizens often use excessive amounts of water for non-essential purposes such as gardening or car washing. Therefore, it would be more practical for governments to offer a limited amount of free water to cover basic needs, while charging for additional usage. This approach would ensure both fairness and sustainability.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that access to clean water is a basic human right, but I disagree that it should be entirely free for everyone. Governments should provide a certain quantity of water free of charge to guarantee people’s basic health and hygiene, but additional consumption should be paid for to prevent overuse and to maintain the system effectively.
