One school of thought holds that university education should be universally accessible and free of charge, irrespective of one’s financial background. While the idea appears well-intentioned, I would argue that it could do more harm than good.

Proponents of free university education argue that it promotes social equality by ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their financial circumstances, have access to higher education. In this scenario, those from lower-income families would have the same educational opportunities as their wealthier counterparts. However, it is important to note that making university education free for everyone would be prohibitively expensive and could thus put a strain on government coffers. Allocating resources to provide free education for all could result in cuts to other essential services or an increase in taxes, which may disproportionately affect lower-income households.

Moreover, there are several reasons why governments should not provide free university education. Firstly, the cost of higher education is not solely a financial barrier but also a reflection of the value and commitment students place on their education. By bearing the financial responsibility for their education, students may be more likely to take their studies seriously and strive for success. Worse still, offering free university education could lead to overcrowding and a decline in the quality of education, as institutions may struggle to accommodate the increased number of students. This could result in larger class sizes, reduced access to resources, and a less personalized learning experience.

In conclusion, while providing free university education for everyone may appear to promote social equality, I would contend that the potential financial strain on governments and the potential decline in educational quality outweigh the perceived benefits. Therefore, governments should not adopt this proposal.
