Band 9: Although parents are responsible for raising a child, outside influence plays a key role in their development. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The assertion that while parents bear the primary responsibility for raising their children, external factors are equally crucial in shaping their development is a topic of considerable debate. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. Although the family unit provides the foundational values and emotional security for a child, the wider world – comprising educational institutions, peer groups, and media – plays an indispensable and powerful role in moulding a child’s character, social skills, and worldview.

On one hand, the family, particularly parents, are undeniably the primary architects of a child’s early development. They provide the initial emotional bond and secure attachment that is fundamental for a child’s psychological well-being. Through daily interactions, parents instil core values such as honesty, empathy, and respect. For example, a child who witnesses their parents treating others with kindness and resolving conflicts peacefully is highly likely to internalise these behaviours. This foundational moral compass, established in the home, serves as a crucial filter through which the child will later interpret and engage with external influences.

However, to suggest that parents are the sole architects of a child’s development is to overlook the profound and pervasive impact of the outside world. As children grow, their social circle expands, and peer groups become a dominant influence, particularly during adolescence. The desire for social acceptance and belonging can be so potent that it often overshadows parental guidance. A teenager, for instance, might adopt specific fashion, language, or even behavioural patterns to fit in with their friends, sometimes in direct contradiction to their family’s values. This demonstrates that the social environment can significantly reshape or even supersede the lessons learned at home.

Furthermore, formal education and the broader societal environment serve as powerful agents of socialisation and intellectual growth. Schools are not merely institutions for academic learning; they are microcosms of society where children learn to navigate authority, collaborate with diverse individuals, and develop critical thinking skills. Teachers and mentors often become influential role models. Simultaneously, the ubiquitous presence of media, including social media platforms and entertainment, exposes children to a constant stream of ideas, lifestyles, and global perspectives. This exposure can broaden their horizons and shape their aspirations, often in ways that parents cannot directly control or predict.

In conclusion, while the role of parents in providing a child’s moral and emotional foundation is irreplaceable, it is an oversimplification to view them as the only influence. The dynamic interplay of peer pressure, educational experiences, and media exposure is equally vital in shaping a child’s identity and preparing them for adulthood. Ultimately, a child’s development is a collaborative process, and the most successful outcomes occur when a strong family base acts as a stable anchor, enabling the child to navigate and positively integrate the lessons from the world beyond the home.
