Band 7+: As housing is a basic need for people, government should provide free housing for everyone who cannot afford it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Opinions are divided on whether people should be offered a house free of charge when they do not have the ability to pay for it. Although this tendency may bring about certain benefits, I think the drawbacks are far more significant than the advantages.

Admittedly, the fact that giving home without any cost for people may pose significant benefits, including ensuring people’s safety and reducing crimes. Regarding the former, providing housing could protect them from harsh weather conditions and robbery, which makes them feel secure and focus better on other aspects of life such as education and employment. This might be a great way to alleviate poverty and enhance people’s quality of life. Concerning the reduction of crimes, poor people usually resort to committing crimes when lacking fundamental needs such as food and accommodation. Consequently, supplying housing will help them stay more stable, reduce criminal behavior and provide a foundation for addressing other essential needs.

However, despite the aforementioned benefits, there are significantly more drawbacks for both individuals and society as a whole. For individuals, when people receive free housing, they will not need to work hard to earn money, so they tend to choose a sedentary lifestyle and quit their jobs. As a result, this dependency can lead to reduced motivation to work and contribute to the community and increase the number of people relying on government support. As for the drawbacks of the government, with a limited budget, if more and more people require free housing, the amount of money spent on other pressing issues, including education, healthcare and infrastructure will not be allocated sufficiently. Therefore, an imbalance in the budget will occur, which could limit the government’s ability to respond to emergencies or economic downturns.

In conclusion, while this tendency may present some benefits, its challenges regarding lacking the national budget and making people dependent on the government are more significant. Therefore, I believe that free housing should not be provided for those who cannot afford it.
