Band 6+: Because of the global economy, many goods including what we use as daily basics produced by other countries have to be transported for a long distance. To what extent do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Due to the globalization, many nations are now produced a plethora of daily-based goods, which are imported to another countries and hence require long-distance transportation. Although this initiative may bring many potential advantages, personally, it is my belief that its downside has a more profound and superior impacts on the environment and society.

Those who harbor the long-distance trading market of goods between countries may think that this can bring new opportunities to residents and local community. In the past, in some undeveloped countries, such as Vietnam or Thailan, the low level of industrialization had made goods and daily stuffs scarce and incredibly expensive, deteriorating the living standard of residents. Therefore, in this day and age, by having goods transportated from developed nations, not only can countries with poor financial conditions be promoted but also have a better well-rounded living conditions for residents. Additionally, this trading market can also boost interconnectedness between nations, thereby enhancing global cooperation and collaboration, or global trading as a whole.

It is contended that long-distance trading can bring some crucial benefits; however, this is not to say the its drawbacks is less significant, since it may have adverse influence on both societal and environmental health. First and foremost, the inherant traits of undevelop countries, namely unability to self-sufficient or low level of production, has force them to be dependent on others nations that sell domestic goods. This would make poor nations vunerable to changes, especially when there are adverse conditions, such as wars or diseases, which limit the trading over long conditions, undermining the economic conditions. Moreover, long transportation also requires excessive fossil fuels and releases contaminated pollutants; as a result, this can jeopardize the environment by promoting pollutions, such as air and water pollutions through shipping and airline transportation, respectively.

This essay argued that long-distance trading markets can bring enormous benefit to societal and global market, as well as relationships between nations. However, the downsides have a more far-reaching and adverse effects on the economy if there are any disadvantages for transportation, along with the environmental health by producing toxic pollutants.
