Band 9: Celebrations such as New Year can make some people feel lonelier than usual. What are the reasons for this and how might this issue be tackled?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The issue of increased loneliness during festive periods such as New Year has become a significant concern in modern society. This essay will discuss the main causes of this trend and propose some practical solutions to address it.

There are two primary reasons why holiday-related isolation occurs. Firstly, the main cause is the negative impact of social comparison via digital platforms. This means that individuals often witness idealised images of family gatherings and celebrations of others on social media, which leads to a sense of being a social misfit and feeling excluded/isolated from the collective joy. Secondly, geographical separation from relatives or friends also contributes to this situation. For example, many international students or migrant workers are unable to return home for celebrations due to high travel costs or work commitments, and as a result, they experience a sense of loneliness while being surrounded by festive atmosphere in a foreign environment.

To tackle this problem, several measures should be implemented. The most effective way is for community organizations to host inclusive social events. By doing this, they can create a sense of belonging for those who are alone and provide them with an alternative support group during the festivities. In addition, governments and employers should implement more flexible holiday leave policies. This action would play a vital role in allowing individuals to reschedule their work commitments and facilitate family reunions, effectively reducing the number of people who have to spend New Year in solitude.

In conclusion, while loneliness during celebrations is caused by social comparison and physical distance, it can be resolved through the cooperation of local communities and administrative bodies in implementing the mentioned solutions.
