In contemporary society, a segment of population advocates for freely expressing artists’ notions into their artistic works. Whereas, others argue that it should be restricted by the government due to perceived negative impacts on social security. While it is true to some extent, I do not consent with this perspective as I contend that the freedom of expression is an effective method to enhance cultural value and alter people’s awareness.
On the one hand, some artistic works should be prohibited as it can affect detrimentally to social security. Admittedly, several artists combine elements such as violence, sexuality, and religious belief to their works that might influence a number of individuals, especially, adolescents as they can easily imitate actions from these arts. The imitation possibly alter their perception, behavior, and attitute, leading to the increase in illegal activities and the rate of juvenile delinquency. As a consequence, it can pose a threat to the society and the community.
On the other hand, creative art is an integral part of culture, therefore, allowing artists in innovating and conveying their thoughts into masterpieces freely is an excellent way to evolve culture while staying true to their roots. Undoubtedly, culture can be represented via various forms. Several film producers blend cultural value of Vietnamese popular opera, for example, and Western culture in movies to approach potential audiences. This action cannot only maintain traditional cores but also culminate culture thanks to convergent and developed tendencies. Furthermore, novel art usually sheds lights on important issues. For instance, freely generating fictional facts such as a huge tornado, the environment problems and the awareness of protecting environment have been emerged via films and music videos, resulting in the effort of reducing negative impacts on our environment.
To conclude, even though several individuals do not approve of the freedom of expression in art in lieu of insecurity of the society, I do not agree with this viewpont as I believe that by conveying thoughts with liberty, artists can contribute their efforts to not only preserve cultural identity but also improve the awareness of particular issues such as environmental problems.
