Band 7+: Crime rates among young people are rising. What are the reasons and how can this be stopped?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, the growth of youth crime has become concern for many countries. Although several factors contribute to this trend, effective solutions can be implemented to address the problem. This essay will examine the main causes of youth crime and suggest practical measures to reduce it.

On the one hand, the main cause of rising youth crime is the lack of parental supervision and family support. Moreover, many young people grow up in unstable households where parents either work long hours or do not provide emotional guidance. Therefore, teenagers may may seek acceptance from peers, who engage in risky groups and illegal activities. Additionally, another factor is social and economic inequality. For instance young individuals living in disadvantaged areas often struggle with job opportunities and quality education. Hence, these challenges drive young people towards crime as a way to express their disappointment and gain financial benefit. In addition, teenagers are exposed to violent content and online peer bullying of social media, which can normalise these types of illegal behaviour.

On the other hand, several effective solutions can help address the issue. First of all, governments and educational institutions should invest in community centres and after-school programmes, which can provide safe environments for young people. That’s why, these initiatives can offer mentorship, sports activities, reducing the likelihood of engagement in crime. For example, parents should be educated about effective parenting methods and the importance of monitoring their children’s behaviour. Moreover, stricter online regulations are essential to limit young people’s exposure to harmful content. Finally, creating more employment opportunities and scholarship for disadvantaged youth can give them a sense of purpose and reduce the appeal of criminal activities

In my opinion, the increase in youth crime is primarily caused by social inequality, lack of parental supervision and the influence of social media. Therefore, governments and local authorities should focus on improving community support, strengthening family relationships and providing job opportunities for younger generations. These measures can play an important role in reducing crime rates and promoting safer societies.
