Band 7+: Cyclists and car drivers sharing the same road cause some problems. What are the problems? What are the solutions?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, the road-sharing scheme which is applied to bicycles and cars has raised some major concerns. This essay will delve into the underlying consequences of this tendency before proposing some effective solutions.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that the coexistence of cyclists and car drivers on the same road results in noticeable issues. First and foremost, accidents are the biggest concern. As cars and bicycles have distinct functions and shapes, using the same road makes cyclists more vulnerable to injuries in collisions with cars due to their smaller size and lack of protective gear. Secondly, traffic congestion should also be taken into consideration in regard to this road-sharing system. In areas with high volumes of both cyclists and car drivers, the presence of either bikes or cars can sometimes contribute to traffic jams during peak hours, especially in intersections, roundabouts and narrow roads.

Despite the above problems, there are numerous approaches that the government and citizens can take to mitigate the disadvantages of sharing the same road. Firstly, the officials should allocate funds to bicycle infrastructure. Since collisions are unavoidable, it is a good idea that separate bike lanes or paths be constructed in order to provide cyclists with a safer and more comfortable alternative to sharing the road with cars. For instance, Copenhagen, Denmark, is renowned for its extensive network of bike lanes. Furthermore, strict enforcement of traffic laws should be made, including those related to speeding, passing, and yielding so that dangerous driving behaviors can be prevented. On the other hand, educational and awareness campaigns should be organized on a regular basis to equip individuals with detailed information about the rights and responsibilities of both cyclists and drivers, promoting mutual respect and understanding.

In conclusion, although road-sharing proposals for cyclists and car drivers pose some challenges about accidents and traffic congestion to people, these issues can be alleviated. With modern bike infrastructure, strict commute rules and educational initiatives, I firmly believe that cars and bicycles can live in harmony even if they use the same road.
