Online dating has become more popular now, more than ever, this is owing to the increasing use of smart phones and the advent of social media. Despite the advantages of online dating, the disadvantages, which many argue far outweighs the advantages are enormous. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of online dating.
Some of the advantages of online dating, is the elimination of distance as a barrier. Now, you can date anyone, in any part of the world, without travelling and in the comfort of your bedroom. This is possible because you can video call, text and chat your partner from any part of the world.
Other visible advantages of online dating is the opportunities that it provides to see the world, to make new friends, to find new connections to life changing opportunities. For example, someone with no job in my county, who found love in Japan, began applying to foreign companies through the help of his girlfriend and was eventually employed. She helped him raise capital for his relocation and supported his visa and flight fees for them to unite in Japan and be together.
On the flip side, some of the disadvantages of online dating are enormous; serial killers now create social media accounts to lure innocent victims to death, under the guise of love and romance. For instance, in my home country, two girls – Afiba and Celine, who recently started dating a man online, went to visit the man in a nearby state and were eventually murdered on arrival, by this man who had invited them. So many young women, have lost their lives to online dating. A huge majority have also been scammed and defrauded of their live savings under the guise of online dating.
In conclusion, despite the borderless opportunities that online dating provides, I think the cons far out weighs the pros, and one should be smart and careful, when dating online.
