In recent times, it has become increasingly common for individuals to overconsume food across the globe. While there are clear reasons for this trend, I believe that governments and public awareness campaigns can implement several measures to address it.
There are several reasons why people waste large quantities of food. With the introduction of larger portion sizes in supermarkets, individuals often have no choice but to purchase products in large quantities. A case in point is a supermarket in the United States called Costco, which sells food in bulk sizes, encouraging over-purchasing. In many cases, half of the product may expire over time due to insufficient consumption. Furthermore, the promotional pffers such as ”buy one get one free” contribute to the exacerbation of food waste, as a minority of people find them appealing. Consequently, consumers may start to take food for granted and are likely to waste it.
However, I firmly believe that the growing problem of large-scale food waste can be effectively tackled by governments and public awareness initiatives. Stated more plainly, authorities can introduce stricter regulations on food waste, enforce limits on supermarket overstocking, and simultaneously encourage advertisements that promote healthier eating habits. Moreover, social media plays a key role in curbing consumerism by influencing public attitudes towards more sustainable and responsible lifestyles and encouraging individuals to adopt more eco-friendly habits.
In conclusion, food waste has reached alarming levels due to large portion sizes in supermarkets and promotional strategies, however, policymakers can address this issue through public awareness initiatives.
